'Let’s Change the Future of Cars – Find Your Future'

Tokyo, Japan - October 24, 2023: Mr. Masahiko Maeda, Asia Region Chief Executive Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation (“Toyota”) along with Asia regional executives held an extensive media briefing to share Toyota’s direction on the Future Mobility for Asia.

At the Japan Mobility Show, Toyota set the stage with the theme "Let’s Change the Future of Cars! - Find Your Future", embodying the spirit of “Inheritance and Evolution”.

Under Inheritance, Toyota will continue to be a company that is striving to make the Best Products (Product Centered), that meet the need of each market (Region Based). But Toyota will continue to Evolve to become a true mobility company, that will pursue diverse options towards Carbon Neutrality while expanding the Value of Mobility.

With these essential themes of "Carbon Neutrality" and "Expanding the Value of Mobility, Toyota has meticulously crafted the "Toyota Mobility Concept" incorporating Electrification, Diversification, and Intelligence as central pillars.

Electrification

Toyota remains committed to a multi-pathway approach, customizing electrification solutions to the specific needs of customers and regions. In Asia, where diverse factors influence the journey toward Carbon Neutrality, Toyota considers economic, energy, infrastructure, and usage needs to offer a comprehensive approach. Recognizing that scale and speed are required, Toyota aims at sharing multiple electrified and alternative energy vehicles that meet the needs of each customer.

Diversification

Asia is an incredibly varied region, and this is why diversification is crucial to meet the needs of different types of customers, from low end to high end, from passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles.

In Asia, the IMV (Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle) project, including the Hilux and Innova, could best illustrate our efforts to fulfil the region’s diversification. Since its launch in 2004, it has served private and business users’ mobility needs, and furthermore, led to employment, supply chain development, or exports, thereby contributing to the quality of life of residents and many countries’ national objectives. Toyota is now planning to introduce the new IMV 0, which is designed for lower income customers, with greater customizability thereby enhancing accessibility to mobility and improved standard of living for a different segment of customers.

Furthermore, Toyota explores alternative mobility solutions, ensuring inclusivity for individuals with different physical abilities and capabilities, including the elderly or physically impaired. Toyota aims to realize the mobility based on the values of 'Leave No One Behind' and provides optimal ‘Mobility for All’ options for customers.

Intelligence

Intelligence, enabled by connected technologies and data driven solutions, play a critical role in the synergy of mobility and infrastructure.  Toyota is steadily enhancing its connected solutions for making individual customers and fleet customers lives easier by offering solutions like driver behavior guidance, anti-theft tracking or route optimization.  These solutions can also be integrated into infrastructure such as the energy grid for electrified vehicles, or even optimize public infrastructure such as traffic lights. Toyota recognizes that efficient transportation, especially for commercial vehicles, significantly contributes to carbon reduction emissions.

Finally, the three elements of electrification, diversification, and intelligence, must come together as an integrated ecosystem to deliver Carbon Neutrality and Value for Money.

In Thailand, Toyota has started the Thai Dream trial project along with other Commercial Japan Partnership Technology (CJPT) members like Isuzu and Hino, aiming at synergizing with Thailand’s energy infrastructure, electrified vehicles, and data and IT infrastructure, by collaborating with like-minded partners like CP, SCG. Similar solutions, integrating electrification, diversification, and intelligence are being considered for other markets as well.

In closing, Toyota Asia emphasizes, “Toyota has been working on electrification for a long time and developed many commercially viable technologies like the HEV and FCEV. Beyond that, Toyota has also been providing solutions for all types of customers as you saw with the IMV and now the IMV0 Concept. But we realize that for advancing our Toyota Mobility Concept, we must integrate electrification, diversification, and intelligence to truly realize Carbon Neutrality and provide true Value for Mobility. We also recognize that we cannot do this alone and need everyone to come along with us and join this journey.”
